Aiken has a special magic that dates back almost 200 years. The first bit of magic was in the 1830’s, when the world’s first commercial railway was built through the tiny hamlet. A few decades later, Aiken’s pine-scented air was heralded as a curative by Americans, who enjoyed it as a health resort. As Aiken’s popularity grew, it became famous among wealthy American families for polo, thoroughbred racing, golf, ‘court’ tennis, fox hunting, and a rich social life.

With such exhilarating activities, Aiken became known as “The Sporting Capital of the South.” That sporting tradition continues today, with highly rated equestrian, prestigious golf courses, competitions and a roster of residents continuing Aiken’s traditions. Aiken is home to the largest urban forest in North America: 2,200-acre Hitchcock Woods. And Aiken has exciting performing arts events each winter. This historic small town of camellias, mansions, historic inns, magnolias, and delightful cottages has something for everyone, and something special for you!
